Sonji Gem Designs was born from a life shaped by military service and global experience. After years in environments that demanded strength, adaptability, and leadership, the need for beauty didn’t disappear—it deepened.
This brand exists because so much jewelry speaks loudly, but says very little.
Sonji Gem Designs was created to offer pieces that feel grounded, meaningful, and lasting—without needing explanation.
From Service to Studio
Strength doesn’t end when a chapter closes, it evolves.
I’m Sonji Martin, a 20-year Army veteran and the founder of Sonji Gem Designs.
Military service took me around the world, exposing me to different cultures and teaching me the responsibility of leading and caring for others. It shaped my understanding of strength—not as something loud, but as something steady and carried forward every day.
After leaving the military, I faced an unexpected battle. I suffered three collapsed lungs, underwent lung surgery, and spent nearly two decades searching for answers as my health declined. Eventually, my medical conditions were linked to chemical exposures during my service in the Iraq War.
The greatest challenge wasn't physical—it was losing sight of who I was.
I had to learn how to move forward when the life I envisioned looked very different from the one unfolding before me. The challenges continue to be part of my daily life, but they taught me that resilience isn't about overcoming every obstacle—it's about continuing to live with purpose despite them.
Sonji Gem Designs grew from that realization.

Alongside this creative work, I bring a background in Marketing Management, Master’s in Risk Management, and an Applied Jewelry Professional (AJP) certification through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
